The Cardigans is a Swedish band formed in the town of Jönköping in 1992. The band's musical style has varied greatly from album to album and encompasses their early indie leanings passing through '60s-inspired pop and more band-based rock.

Their debut album Emmerdale (1994) gave them a solid base in their home country and enjoyed some success abroad, especially in Japan. But it wasn't until their breakthrough second album Life (1995) that international audiences and critics responded. The band is perhaps best known outside of Sweden for their international hit singles "Erase/Rewind" and "My Favourite Game" from the album Gran Turismo (1998) and "Lovefool" from the album First Band on the Moon (1996). Its inclusion in the soundtrack of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet by director Baz Luhrmann secured their popularity. The Cardigans have sold 5 million albums worldwide.

1992-1995
Peter Svensson and Magnus Sveningsson, both heavy metal musicians, formed the group on October 31 1992 in Jönköping, Sweden, with drummer Bengt Lagerberg, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson and lead singer Nina Persson. Living together in a small apartment, The Cardigans recorded a demo tape which record producer Tore Johansson heard, leading to an invitation to record at a studio in Malmö. In 1994 they released their debut album Emmerdale in Sweden and Japan (it was re-released internationally in 1997). The album includes the Swedish radio hit "Rise & Shine" and was later voted the best of 1994 in a poll in Slitz magazine.

The rest of 1994 was spent touring Europe and recording Life, which was released worldwide in 1995. Life became an international success, selling more than a million copies and achieving platinum status in Japan. In 1996 Life was released under the label Minty Fresh in the U.S., but this release was essentially a compilation of tracks from Emmerdale and Life. Life was perhaps a satirical riposte to the first album, and saw the band move in a more avant-garde direction in terms of arrangements and artwork.

1996-2002
After their success with Life, The Cardigans signed to Mercury Records, under which they released First Band on the Moon worldwide in 1996. With this album, the band had developed into a more complex, darker animal, the songs included themes of heartbreak, infidelity and despair. "Lovefool" was a hit across the globe, especially in the United States and again in Japan, where the album reached platinum in only three weeks. However, it was unrepresentative of the album as a whole and, although it helped it achieve gold sales status in America, many critics branded them saccharine soft-pop on the basis of "Lovefool". The song was shown on MTV in the late 90s as a music video with clips from the 1996 hit film Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

In 1997, the band played themselves on the graduation episode of Beverly Hills 90210.

1998's Gran Turismo was darker and more moody, and was followed by a long hiatus during which the band members pursued solo side projects. The same year they also released a compilation of rare B-sides called The Other Side of the Moon as a Japan-only release which makes this album somewhat rare outside Japan. The video of the song "My Favourite Game" was censored by MTV for showing reckless driving. Despite this, it went on to become their second hit song around the globe. "My Favourite Game" was also featured on the soundtrack of the Playstation video game Gran Turismo 2 for the opening sequence of races. That year also saw their song "Deuce" appearing on The X-Files: The Album.

2003-present
The Cardigans returned in 2003 with Long Gone Before Daylight, a quieter, more ambient collection of songs mainly written by Nina Persson and Peter Svensson. Long Gone Before Daylight became one of the best selling albums in Sweden of 2003 with sales over 120,000 (2x Platinum).

On 28 April 2005 the band's iTunes Originals album was released through iTunes.

On 19 October 2005 the band released their sixth album Super Extra Gravity to generally favorable reviews. Super Extra Gravity went straight to the #1 spot on the Swedish album chart and has so far been certified Gold (sales over 40,000).

The band is having another break from recording and touring. A Best of compilation album was released in January 2008.

Biografía
1992-1995 The Cardigans es un grupo nacido en Suecia. Se formó el 31 de octubre de 1992 en la pequeña ciudad de Jönköping, al sudoeste de Suecia.

Su primer disco fue Emmerdale y fue lanzado en 1994. De este álbum, el primer sencillo que se lanzó fue Rise & Shine. Esta canción se convirtió rápidamente en una de las favoritas de las radios suecas, y Slitz, la revista de música más importante del país, calificó el disco como el mejor del año[cita requerida].

Después de una larga serie de exitosos conciertos, The Cardigans volvieron a entrar en los Tamborine Studios de Malmö y junto con Tore Johansson, el productor de su primer disco, empezaron a componer las canciones del que sería su nuevo álbum, Life que saldría a la venta en marzo de 1995. 1996-2002
Nina Persson en conciertoEn septiembre de 1996, sale al mercado su tercer álbum First Band on the Moon. Como en sus dos discos anteriores, fue grabado en los Tamborine Studios en Malmoe y fue producido por Tore Johansson, pero a diferencia de otros álbumes en donde Peter componía la música y Magnus, las letras, en esta ocasión fue Nina Persson la que escribió el 50% de los versos. Este disco vendió más de dos millones y medio de copias, y su primer sencillo fue el exitoso Lovefool. Este tema estuvo incluido en la película Romeo + Julieta, versión Baz Luhrmann. Este sencillo no solo fue de los más escuchados en Estados Unidos o Inglaterra, sino que se colocó en el número dos en la lista de ventas inglesa, donde permaneció en el Top 5 durante cinco semanas. El álbum donde se incluía esta canción fue muy polémico al respecto del sonido que usó The Cardigans. Arriesgaron con un sonido diferente, a veces con ritmo de jazz y con una instrumentación al estilo bunge. Quizás, en ese cambio radical de sonido estuvo la clave del éxito de este álbum. Llegó a ser disco de platino en Estados Unidos y Japón y disco de oro en el Reino Unido. Las actividades de promoción del single Lovefool y del álbum First Band on the Moon parecía que no acabarían nunca.

El enorme cansancio acumulado durante el año 1997, hizo que The Cardigans decidieran tomarse un merecido descanso en su casa de Malmö para recuperar nuevas fuerzas que les permitieran empezar a componer nuevas canciones. A principios de 1998, colaboraron en varios álbumes de otros artistas, además de incluir un tema suyo en la banda sonora de The X-Files. También varios componentes del grupo empezaron a hacer cosas en solitario. En junio de 1998, el grupo empezó a grabar su nuevo disco. El CD sale a la venta en octubre de ese mismo año, y fue llamado Gran Turismo en homenaje al juego de vídeo de automóviles.

El vídeo musical con el que se presentó My Favourite Game, fue bastante polémico. En él se podía ver a Nina Persson conduciendo un automóvil descapotable, al cual le puso una piedra en los pedales para que no parara en una carretera del desierto. En esa aventura, el automóvil arrasa con todo lo que se le cruzaba por delante. Es un vídeo con tres versiones, en dos de ellos, Nina acaba el vídeo muriendo de manera diferente en ambos, y en otro la aventura de la cantante es más tranquila, ya que no se le cruza ningún automóvil. Esta última versión se hizo para los países que consideraban que el videoclip original era muy violenta.

Con Gran Turismo, The Cardigans alcanzaron la madurez, que hasta ese momento no habían alcanzado con sus anteriores discos. Este álbum, además, les dio la oportunidad de ganar cuatro Grammys, a las categorías de Mejor Álbum, Mejor Grupo/PopRock, Mejor compositor y Mejor productor.

Erase/Rewind, fue el segundo sencillo que se extrajo de Gran Turismo. Este sencillo permitió a The Cardigans, entrar de nuevo en el top 10 de la lista británica. Además, fue incluida en la banda sonora de la película “Nunca me han besado”.

Después de otra intensa gira promocional, Nina, Magnus y Peter empezaron a principios del año 2001 a elaborar sus proyectos como solistas. Nina publicó un álbum con su nuevo grupo A Camp, con la cual afirma que ha crecido como músico y ha encontrado sus raíces musicales, con sonido más Country que Pop. Peter trabajó en la banda Paus. Magnus, por su parte, lanzó su primer trabajo en solitario, Righteous Boy, junto a una banda de amigos cercanos (Henrik Andersson, Jens Jansson, Helena Josefsson, ...)


2003-presente Pasados cinco años después de estas experiencias y de haber colaborado en el disco de duetos de Tom Jones, The Cardigans publicaron Long Gone Before Daylight. En este disco dan un cambio drástico y emocionan con un sonido más puro y sencillo que con sus anteriores discos. El primer sencillo es For What It’s Worth. Otros sencillos fueron You're The Storm y Live And Learn.

En 2005 publican Super Extra Gravity. The Cardigans volvió a trabajar con el productor Tore Johansson en este álbum en el que el grupo ha querido recuperar la espontaneidad y la frescura que se echaron en falta en su más maduro Long Gone Before Daylight. El título de su primer sencillo fue I need some fine wine and you, you need to be nicer.

A principios de 2008 lanzan 'Best Of, un álbum recopilatorio.

The Cardigans sind eine schwedische Band, die den Genres Rock, Indie-Pop und Alternative Rock zuzuordnen sind. Sie wurden 1992 von den Heavy-Metal-Musikern Peter Svensson und Magnus Sveningsson gegründet. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden die Cardigans zu einer der erfolgreichsten schwedischen Bands und zählen zu den Kritikerlieblingen des europäischen Pop-Rock- und Alternative-Rock-Genres.

Bandgeschichte

Anfänge
Peter Svensson und Magnus Sveningsson, beide eigentlich Heavy-Metal-Musiker, gründeten die Gruppe The Cardigans, zu deutsch soviel wie „Die Strickjacken“, 1992 im südschwedischen Jönköping. Ein selbst aufgenommenes Demotape fand beim Produzenten Tore Johansson soviel Gefallen, dass er die Band in ein Studio in Malmö einlud. Das Debütalbum Emmerdale erschien 1994 unter dem Label Stockholm Records. Die Band gewann durch das Album ausschließlich in Schweden an Bedeutung, was jedoch kein Mindererfolg war, da das Album dort die Auszeichnung zur Platte des Jahres bekam.


Erste internationale Beachtung
1995 erschien das Nachfolgealbum Life, welches die Hitsingles Carnival und die beiden schon auf dem Debütalbum veröffentlichten Songs Sick And Tired und Rise & Shine enthielt. Überhaupt enthält das zweite Album insgesamt fünf Spuren des ersten Albums. Mit Life gewann die Band erstmals an Bedeutung außerhalb Schwedens, was sich auch an ersten Platzierungen in den britischen Top-40-Singlecharts kenntlich macht.

Als drittes Album erschien 1996 First Band On The Moon. Die Auskopplung Lovefool kam im Herbst 1996 fast in die britischen Top 20 und fand Verwendung in der Neuverfilmung von Romeo + Julia mit Leonardo di Caprio und Claire Danes. Lovefool wurde daraufhin 1997 erneut veröffentlicht und erreichte Platz 2 in den britischen Charts. Durch das international gestiegene Interesse an der Band bekam sie Gastauftritte bei David Letterman oder der damals populären Serie Beverly Hills, 90210.


Manifestation
1998 veröffentlichten die Cardigans Gran Turismo, das mit weltweit mehr als 2,5 Millionen verkauften Exemplaren erfolgreichste Album der Band. Die drei ausgekoppelten Singles daraus, My Favourite Game, Erase/Rewind und Hanging Around, waren in den britischen Singlecharts recht erfolgreich – Erase/Rewind schaffte sogar den Sprung in die Top 10. Der Albumtitel war offenbar als Reminiszenz an das Konsolenspiel Gran Turismo zu verstehen; der Titel My Favourite Game wurde als Remix in der zweiten Version des Spieles als musikalische Untermalung eines Bonus- bzw. Intro-Videos verwendet.

Noch im gleichen Jahr beteiligten sich die Cardigans an der Filmmusik zu A Life Less Ordinary mit dem Lied War. Der Musik zu X-Files spendierten sie das Lied Deuce.

Mit Tom Jones nahmen sie 1999 für sein Album Reload die Coverversion Burning Down The House auf, welches die Top Ten in Großbritannien erreichte.


Neuorientierung
Nach dem Erscheinen von Gran Turismo und den folgenden aufreibenden, weltweiten Touren waren die Cardigans ausgepumpt. Und zu dem Zeitpunkt war gar nicht klar, ob und wie es mit den Cardigans weitergehen würde. Die Bandmitglieder konzentrierten sich auf Soloprojekte: Svensson schrieb Songs für Titiyo und arbeitete mit Joakim Berg an dem Projekt Paus. Sveningsson veröffentlichte unter dem Namen Righteous Boy sein Soloalbum, und Nina Persson bastelte mit Freunden an dem Projekt A Camp.


Neubeginn
Ein gemeinsames Treffen in einem Hotelzimmer in Los Angeles leitete die Wende ein. 2003 beendeten sie ihre Pause und veröffentlichten das atmosphärische Album Long Gone Before Daylight. Von Kritikern gelobt, konnte es jedoch nicht an den Erfolg des Vorgängeralbums anknüpfen. Von den beiden ausgekoppelten Singles schaffte es nur For What It's Worth in die Top 40 der britischen Charts – You're The Storm floppte hingegen.

Am 14. Oktober 2005 erschien das neue Album Super Extra Gravity. Die erste Singleauskopplung daraus war I Need Some Fine Wine And You, You Need To Be Nicer, als zweite Single wurde am 10. Februar 2006 Don’t Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds) veröffentlicht.


Trivia
Aufgrund der musikalischen Vorlieben einiger Mitglieder der Cardigans (siehe oben) haben sie besonders in den ersten Jahren immer wieder Lieder von Black Sabbath bzw. Ozzy Osbourne bei ihren Konzerten gespielt und einige davon fanden sogar Platz auf den frühen CDs der Band:

Das Besondere daran ist, dass alle Cover auf der einen Seite nach den Cardigans klingen, auf der anderen Seite aber weiterhin als Black-Sabbath-Lieder wiedererkennbar sind. Auf ähnliche Weise spielten die Cardigans als B-Seite ihrer Single "For what it´s worth" 2003 das Kraftwerk -Stück "Das Model" mit deutschem Text ein.

Anfang 2004 erschien das Album "A tribute to the cardigans", auf dem 11 Bands aus ganz Europa Hits der Band einspielten.

2004: The Cardigans – Live in London
Die 18 Lieder wurden während der Tour First Band On The Moon am 20./21. November 1996 im Shepherds Bush Empire in London aufgenommen. Zuvor wurde die DVD bereits 1997 als VHS veröffentlicht. 2004 entschloss man sich zu einer Wiederveröffentlichung in zeitgemäßer Qualität und zeitgemäßem Format. Die DVD enthält – im Gegensatz zur früheren VHS – zudem eine kurze Dokumentation zu dieser Tournee, das US-Promo-Video zu Been It und eine interaktive Bildergalerie.
